We were about to go on our first holiday after getting the chickens we'd wished many years about having, and suddenly panicked about what to do with our beloved girls. Our friends and family backed away from helping, too worried about what to do and quite frankly the onerous task of visiting dusk and dawn.
We found a chicken sitter in the form of a poultry breeder near Maidstone in Kent and met them one cold blustery day, leaving our pride and joy in a wooden coop in the middle of a field, nowhere near civilisation. We were distraught. (No really, Caroline sat in the car and sobbed.)
On the upside, our girls were joyous when we returned having not seen a treat, rarely a person for a fortnight. The next morning whilst Russell got the girls up, back in their luxurious Eglu, Henidorm was born. Never were the chickens of South East London going to be subjected to such an ordeal. We wanted to offer a service to give likeminded owners piece of mind whilst they were away leaving us to look after their beloved chickens just like they would back in their own gardens.
As we grew we acquired more Eglu Classics and Go's for boarding. Our chosen coop allows us to easily clean, disinfect and hose down the houses between boards and reduces risk of red mite. In 2013, we added an Eglu Cube as we had received a number of requests for boarding larger flocks. Chicken keeping really is addictive.
In 2012 we began hen keeping courses after a number of requests from would be hen keepers. We are Omlet Hen Party hosts as well as offering private and family courses.
We are currently proud keepers of 13 hens which are housed in an extended Eglu Cube and a Classic. We have a variety of breeds but mainly hybrids. We get brown, green, blue and white eggs!
In 2014 we began working in local schools offering both hens to look after and support incubation projects done with knowledge, care and being socially responsible.
Russell has been given many poultry keeping books over the years, each one studiously devoured and you want to see his back catalogue of Practical Poultry. He's been called out to past guests homes to give opinions when their chickens are under the weather, saving many owners from costly vets bills. Not to mention the late night call out to clean up and care for a poorly chicken after a fox attack.
Caroline will deal with your enquiries, quotes and hopefully bookings (she is the brains - and the webmaster!) can't wait to hear from you and meet your girls. She'll normally be the one to meet you, if you drop off in the day, or if you require pickups. If you are having the Check on Chicks service then Caroline will normally also water your veggies if you wish.
Rest assured they will be looked after just like another member of the family.
In November 2023 we were interviewed and featured in The Times. Hen hotels for chicken owners who have to fly (thetimes.co.uk) And also by Adrian Chiles on Radio Five Live!
