We are well known locally for our hens and are often asked for advice by novice and 'soon to be' poultry keepers. In response to this we now offer introductory courses for those thinking of getting their first hens. Caroline was a professional trainer in the City pre children, so this now combines her skills with our hobby! We would love to share our hobby and enthusiasm with you as you start out. Our courses are run on a friendly and informal basis with lots of practical hands-on activities.
Introduction to Chicken Keeping
The course will give you a good introduction to Chicken Keeping. It covers;
• Our hens and the different breeds that may suit you
• Types of housing, runs and fencing
• Daily / weekly routines, setting up and cleaning the Eglu
• Being prepared to bring your first hens home
... • Caring for your hens and keeping them healthy and safe. Including Predators, pests, diseases and essential chicken first aid.
• Holding a hen and doing a vent check!
• Types of feed including treats
• Cockerels
• Chicken behaviour - broodiness, pecking orders, introducing new birds
Finally, enjoy a cup of tea and home-made cake, made with eggs provided by our hens and ask as many questions as you have. We also have a selection of poultry books and monthly magazines which
we’ve found particularly helpful and you can have a little look over tea
Bookings can be made via the links on the Omlet website (https://www.omlet.co.uk/courses/host/117960) or we can arrange a private course tailored just for you for £125.
We look forward to meeting you!
